David Heaney SC

After admission to the bar in 1976, David practised as a barrister sole for three years. In 1980 he commenced practice on his own account as a barrister and solicitor under the name Heaney & Co, acting predominantly for insurance companies.
Over the next three decades David developed his expertise and skill in insurance-related litigation, specialising more recently in cases relating to local authorities. He is best known for his advocacy skills and in 2008 was appointed Senior Counsel, the first solicitor to achieve that honour in Auckland.
David has been involved in more trials involving local authorities in the last ten years than any other practitioner. He has a solid commitment to representing those authorities and a keen interest in the legal principles involved.
He is the senior partner in Heaney & Co, which is a well-established boutique litigation law firm. Together with his partners, Susan and Helen, he manages an extensive team of common lawyers and a large body of litigation.
